Case 1: A MMORPG manual (Guild Wars)

Original: Before the academy, the scene was mostly what Devona expected. Dust and bits of debris covered the ground. Burnt trunks reached toward the sky like so many skeletal fingers, the haunting remnants of what was once a lush, tree-lined garden. But as the gates swung fully open, Devona was granted another view.

"Charr warband," shouted Mhenlo. "Close the gates!"

The plaza before the academy was crawling with Charr; furry upright beasts with huge fangs and even bigger claws. In the centre of their camp, built out of tree limbs and straw, sat a towering, flaming effigy, a tribute to their fiery gods.

This one required a bit of research in the Bible:

Case 2: A dialogue (Call of Juarez)

Original: It is indeed disappointing that your fellow citizens prefer the pleasures of the flesh to the spiritual salvation offered by this sanctuary. In vain has the voice from Heaven said of the whore of Babylon, ''Come forth, my people, out of here, that ye have no fellowship with her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.'
And what exactly would they be receiving here, padre? Insults? Rebukes? Life's too damn short to spend it listening to self-righteous sons of bitches like you. A free round of drinks for anybody who wants to follow me back to my saloon!
Clyde Forrester, is that what you came here for? How dare you turn my flock away from the light!
If it wasn't for sinners like me, you'd be out of a job, padre. You can't save 'em, if I don't tempt 'em...
Enough, you snake! Get out of my sight!
I know all about you, 'father', so don't go getting all high and mighty with me. You're no better then a--
Get out of this sanctuary!
'Lo, I come quickly,' sayeth the Lord, 'And my reward is with me, to render each as his work shall be!'

Did you know that of the hundreds of games I have translated, all have passed Nintendo's, Sony's and Microsoft's quality assurance? This is why:

Case 3: User interface infested with Sony naming conventions (Disney's Cars)

Original: There is insufficient space on the Memory Card in Slot
to save new files. Cars requires
file and
blocks to save a Cars Profile. Existing files may be loaded and overwritten. To manage the contents of your Memory Card, use the Memory Card Screen.

So, how do you make sure that game marketing texts stay just as cool in Dutch as they were written in English? You hire me:

Case 4: A catchy website (Nintendo)

Original: Before you can shout "Don't do it!", the problem-prone princess is uttering those famous last words "Oh well, what's the harm?" and opening said box... Next thing you know, Mario receives a letter from Peach, with the royal madam essentially strong-arming the moustachioed maestro to join her on a treasure hunting expedition. Being a can-do kind of guy, Mario embarks on a quick seafaring voyage to meet up with the pushy princess. But upon arrival at Rogueport, Peach is conspicuous by her absence.

By the way, remember Perimeter, one of the most original strategy games ever? This is how Codemasters Loekalized (and sold!) it:

Case 5: A Biblical text (Perimeter)

Original: IN THE BEGINNING... were the Spirits. And the Spirits created the Worlds. And in their own image, Man to walk upon the Worlds. The Spirits watched from afar as Man grew and became curious; a thirst to discover the far side of the horizon blossomed in his breast. As Man grew, he explored; as he explored, he grew. He grew until the worlds were full.

When the worlds could no longer sustain him, Man created the Frames and in his multitudes, in the Frames he lived.

And in the Frames he rotted.

Seeing the stagnation of Man in his ignorant self-incarceration, the Spirits took pity upon their creation and returned to him in corporeal form. Shining a light into the future, the Spirits showed Man the Alpha and Omega of the worlds and set him upon the path to his destiny. Thus speaks the legend.

The Spirits are with us still. We, the people of the Exodus are guided by their serenity and wisdom. Through the Terminals, we hear their voice. By their prescient sight, shall we achieve our destiny. May the Spirits aid us. May the Spirits save us. May the Spirits lead us home.

Via hun vooruitziende blik zullen wij onze bestemming bereiken. Mogen de Zielen ons helpen. Mogen de Zielen ons redden. Mogen de Zielen ons huiswaarts leiden.

Puns are always very hard to translate. Most translators translate these too literally, so that the humour is lost. The trick is not to translate literally, but to come up with something close enough that merely follows the same absurd logic. After all, the main goal of a pun is not to convey precise information, but to make people laugh. Good translators always look at the actual purpose of a text and base their translation style on that. Translation is not about what you write, but about what you mean.

Case 6: Puns (Insaniquarium, NDA)

Original: Why couldn't the pony talk? Because he was a little hoarse.

Omdat-ie graag paard.

Original: What did the daddy buffalo say to his kid before leaving the house? Bison!

Bizonder!

Last but not least, you are probably all too familiar with the difficult legalese used in End User License Agreements that often accompany games. This is where my experience as a legal translator for the European Union comes in handy, as I speak this language like no one else.
